In their words
From the recordingI count both red and green as lucky: red for the Chinese background, green because a green light means pass. But at the light, red also means stop. So for big exams I alternate between wearing red and wearing green. On green, translated from the recording
If I am buying something and cannot decide, I default to pink. It cannot go wrong. A gift for a girl whose taste I do not know: pink again. On pink, translated from the recording
Black seems to absorb every kind of energy, the good and the bad alike. On black, translated from the recording
If a foreigner moved to my hometown tomorrow, the one color rule I would warn them about: do not wear a green hat.On green, translated from the recording
Sayings contributed
Romanized, with literal translation- hong hong huo huo: flourishing
- lü yi ang ran: green in full flood
- liu gong fen dai: the powdered beauties of the six palaces
On color in film
The curator's own questionHeroes wear red: Zhu Zhu Xia, Nezha, Crayon Shin-chan, Superman, Spider-Man, and Chihiro. Villains lean green, from Plankton on down. And Legally Blonde, where pink is feminine power: everyone assumes the woman in pink is not serious, and the film turns that assumption over.
Generational note
Would the grandparents answer differently? Her grandparents would not accept a pink or green wedding: it must be full red. Her grandmother never wears makeup and would not know the idiom about powdered beauties.
Luck, taboo, belief
Custom versus convictionRed and green, worn in alternation on exam days by the whole logic above; black absorbs too much of everything to trust.
